THE VILLAGE TRIANGLE IN WOLFGANGSEE - Phil & Jill

The three villages by the lake are directly connected thanks to the Wolfgangsee ferries. To join the circle of the three villages I took the ferry to StroBl, only a 20 minute boat ride from St Wolfgang, stopping at Gschwendt Park Platz on the way.

The first significance difference was the wide, flat lakeside and actual small sand beaches so people can swim from the shore unlike St Wolfgang, where you have to jump or dive in from a platform. The area is accessible from the main highway so StroBl has a lot of camping. Big caravan parks and Austrian blue tent/white roof canvas parks.

All sorts of watersports were happening at lakeside. The one which caught my eye the most was a motor boat with a long pole hanging out the side. Little kids and teenagers were learning to water ski by holding on to the pole and when they gained confidence they grabbed hold of the handle. What a great way to learn to ski.

The word 'StroBl' means 'scrubby man' and can be found in chronicles from the 14th century. Back then a certain Friedrick Strobolo was the first owner if the 'Seege' (fishing control) at the Wolfgangsee. The settlement of the village came from the 'Gut am Schober' (a manor) and from a base for iron from Steirmark which had to be shipped from a tavern. As these facilities were owned by the wealthy Strobl family for more than 150 years, the village was called Strobl as well.

The promenade is very pretty with its flower display.

I wandered around the couple of streets only finding a couple of Gausthofs and a few shops. Great contrast to both thriving villages of St Gilgen and St Wolfgang but enlighting to see how the three villages which make up the Wolfgangsee look like. I enjoyed an ice cream sitting in the park and nearly missed the ferry which came in so quietly. However they held the gangplank til I got down the fairly long pier and we set sail for St Wolfgang and r
back to base.

On return a quick shower and spruce up as Phil was taking me on a dinner date on the lakeside terasse of the Seebochen Hotel at the Markt Square in St Wolfgang. I have mentioned this in another post if the blog but it was so pleasant it deserves another mention. We always notice and remark on the calm of the European early evening and this was no exception, it was delightful as we enjoyed a local beer before dinner. The lake was glistening and the projection from under the trees was just so inviting. I thought I was in heaven. The sun's glow gave a pink aura over the water.

Phil chose a pork filet with chanterelles, potato cake and a blue cream cheese sauce. I had a veal weiner snitzel with parsley potatoes and cranberries. We washed this down with a dry, still white Austrian wine. For dessert a traditional Apple Strudel. Definitely the meal of the trip.
