WORLD WAR I BATTLEFIELDS -Part 3- Jill & Phil

As you drive around this beautiful countryside, with its rolling plains filled with wheat and other agricultural crops, on well formed roads nothing could be more idyllic. However the French don't forget what happened in 1916 - 18 here when villages were completely bombed destroying villages, churches, schools and smashing the fields to pieces. Actually many of the surrounding villages have small community festivals to celebrate 100 years this week from the signing of the Peace Treaty at Versailles marking the end of all the misery that had gone before.

Lunch stop was just down the corner at Le Tommy - Cafe du souvenir run for a very long time by Dominique Zanardi. He was obviously well known to regular tourists who called out, 'bye Dom see you next year'. Phil and I had a nice lunch of fish, salad and the omnipresent chips. The cafe was full of war information and memoriabilia.
